ABVTA Radiation Safety Week Webinar - Basics of Hands-Free Radiology

November 8 - 14, 2021 marks the inaugural ABVTA Radiation Safety Week.

With increasing caseloads and staffing challenges, our personal radiation safety may not always be top of mind. Veterinary professionals are exposed to radiation on a daily basis.

Your safety is justifiable, lets work together to reduce occupational radiation exposure of veterinary professionals through innovation and education.

The ABVTA will be hosting two webinars throughout the week. November 14th we will be discussing the basics of utilizing hands-free radiology in veterinary practice, specifically for thoracic and abdominal techniques for small animals.

Hands-free radiography is a new concept but it is taking over the world with more hospitals transitioning to hands-free techniques (for both awake and sedated patients) and leaving manual restraint as a last resort.

In this session, we will review  the basics of hands-free radiography techniques, positioning tools, address misconceptions, go over different ranges of hands-free techniques and where do we start.

Patient comfort, efficiency and positive group discussion are all essential when using hands-free techniques.

Registration is complimentary for all ABVTA members. All members of the veterinary team are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Registration opens: October 22, 2021
Registration closes November 10, 2021

This course has been approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit from the ABVMA for Alberta veterinary technologists and veterinarians.

Speakers: Julia Bitan, RVT and Shannon Gervais, RVT

Julie started the Hands Free Xray initiative in 2016 to bring awareness to radiation safety in the veterinary workplace and help reduce occupational exposure to veterinary workers. She recently (March 2019), finished her 2-year term on the Board of Directors with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT). Julia grew up in Jerusalem, Isreal and has worked as a small animal RVT for over 10 years. Julia's work received awards and recognition from several organizations along with invitations to present at industry conferences and events.

Shannon Gervais continues to be a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technologist with the OAVT for the past 21 years!

Shannon has gained a wide variety of experience throughout her veterinary career with everything from clinical experience to human resources in the veterinary space.

She began her clinical career in companion animal practices which later took her into bovine and companion animal pharmaceutical sales.

Shannon’s interest in developing people and partnerships led her into a regional sales and key account management role before returning back to the hospital setting as general manager for a large ICU/Specialty referral hospital.

She later went on to pursue a role within human resources as director of recruiting operations.

Shannon’s genuine passion for the veterinary industry and specifically her fellow RVT’s, has brought her into her current national role within the VCA Medical Operations team as Director of Technologist/Technician Learning & Development.

Shannon lives in Okotoks, Alberta with her husband and two children.  Their family is completed with what she refers to as the “dream life” accommodating a number of horses, cattle, chickens, dogs, one cat and of course her lizard.
