All veterinary team members are welcome to join veterinary technician specialist in behaviour, Jessica Benoit and the Companion Veterinary Clinic training team for a 2 day in-person workshop on February 8 & 9 at Companion Veterinary Clinic in Edmonton, Alberta!

Learn the basics of cooperative care and training opt-in behaviours, how to incorporate food and non-food distraction into veterinary exams and procedures, and then get an in-depth look at case studies, followed by discussion and questions daily! This workshop will include morning lectures: Cooperative Care in Action: Techniques for Food and Non-food Distraction and Cooperative Care: Getting Consent at the Vet.

Afternoon labs will include learning when and how to use towel handling techniques, demonstrations for gentle handling techniques for various veterinary procedures, tips and tricks for muzzles, safe kennel retrieval, cone collars and sedation. Day two, participants have the opportunity to observe and participate in cooperative care training using canine and feline participants. The cooperative care training will include how to teach opt-in behaviours, and introducing touch using predictor cues and veterinary equipment.

About Jessica Benoit RVT, VTS (Behaviour), CPDT-KA, KPA CTP, Fear Free Certified Trainer

Jessica graduated from the NAIT Animal Health Technology program in 2010. In addition to being a Registered Veterinary Technologist, Jessica is a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Behaviour; she is the second Veterinary Technologist in Canada to earn this designation and among 25 in the world. She is also a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and Fear Free Certified veterinary professional, trainer, and speaker.

Jessica is proud to be the co-owner of Companion Veterinary clinic, a Fear Free Certified Practice since 2018. She developed the training and behaviour program at Companion Veterinary Clinic in 2013, developing curricula for dog training classes, kitten classes, trick training, and offering private training and behaviour modification sessions. Her goals have always been for clients to see their veterinary clinic as the first step to helping them with their pet’s behaviour, and to ensure the emotional welfare of patients during veterinary visits.
