ABVTA Radiation Safety Week Webinar: Occupational Radiation Exposures in Veterinary Medicine

Join us as we discuss common occupational health hazards associated with ionizing radiation and the approach to risk reduction in veterinary medicine. Findings from recent investigations into radiation safety behaviors among veterinarians and veterinary technicians, doses associated with diagnostic radiograph acquisition, lead exposure from PPE in this setting, and practical ways to protect workers from ionizing radiation will be discussed. Speaker: Niels Koehncke, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Dr. Koehncke is a specialist in occupational medicine and Professor, Department of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, and a faculty member of the Canadian Centre for Rural and Agricultural Health. He provides clinical consultation in occupational medicine at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and supervises or teaches students and residents in medicine, public health, and toxicology.  He co-leads the outreach division of the Centre and provides occupational medical services to local industry. His research focuses on occupational exposure assessments and agricultural health and safety. He has previously served as Director of the Centre for 10 years, and also served as the Chief Occupational Medical Officer for the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety for 19 years.

 

Speaker: Monique Mayer, DVM, MS, DACVR

Monique Mayer is a veterinary radiation oncologist and Professor in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. She completed her DVM degree at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by an Oncology internship and a Radiation Oncology residency and MS degree at Colorado State University. Her research interests include lymphatic drainage in veterinary cancer patients, new methods of radiation treatment delivery, and occupational radiation safety.
