SEMINAR TOPICS
Brachycephalic anesthesia - using case examples and drawing on experience of anesthetizing hundreds of these animals, this presentation will review the primary goals of brachycephalic dog anesthesia, including patient preparation and assessment, intraoperative management, and managing complications.

Dexmedetomidine - this everyday drug comes with both benefits and challenges. In this session, you will gain an understanding of how to use dexmedetomidine (and other alpha2 agonists) appropriately, understand the common complications encountered and how to manage them. Routes of administration for sedation and premedication, including the novel GV20 injection route, will be discussed.

Capnography - don’t know your curare cleft from your cardiogenic oscillations? Attendees will learn the underlying physiology, applications and interpretation of capnograph wave forms, with the goal of understanding how capnography can be integrated into clinical practice.
Open Q&A discussion (“ask me anything” style – could have some questions sent in advance e.g. fasting recommendations) – 45-60 minutes.

Anesthesia equipment - circuits and connectors!? In this overview of the anesthesia machine, the presentation will follow the gas pathway, from oxygen source to patient, and review the selection and use of different breathing circuits. The accompanying dry lab will allow you to integrate theory with practice by applying a standard anesthetic machine checkout procedure and checklist. From the lab, you will gain confidence in assembling and testing your machine, and troubleshooting common equipment problems.

Ask me anything! - this is your chance to ask experienced anesthetists any of those questions that have bugged you over the years - from “how do I anesthetize that?” to “why does this happen?” Come prepared with questions and we’ll get through as many as we can!
