Sedation is often necessary for optimal patient care, despite its challenges. It helps alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress while facilitating procedures safely for both patients and staff.

The selection of appropriate drugs and dosages depends on the clinician’s judgment and the patient’s specific needs, including the desired sedation level, duration, and pain intensity. Proper preparation, such as using pre-visit pharmaceuticals when appropriate and implementing strategies to prevent and manage adverse effects, contributes to successful outcomes.

Effective communication with pet owners is essential, particularly when discussing potential risks and post-sedation effects. Clear explanations help ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.

This presentation will explore key considerations before, during, and after sedation, providing practical guidance to overcome common challenges in veterinary sedation.
